There are over 40,000 species of invertebrates in the UK that live in a wide range of habitats. Our project currently focuses in on a few rarer species found in the Thaw catchment:
Oil Beetles
Darkling Beetles
More information about these species can be found on Buglife Cymru.
What We are Doing for Oil Beetles
Survey, Training & Monitoring We’ve partnered with Buglife to train volunteers on identifying different oil beetle species and have pinpointed potential habitats within the catchment for further monitoring.
Posters We're placing small information posters along the coastal footpath and in public areas where oil beetles are often spotted, helping to raise community awareness about these fascinating insects.
What We are Doing for Darkling Beetles
The nationally scarce darkling beetle is found in just one location in Wales—Limpert Bay on the Vale of Glamorgan coast. This striking beetle relies on driftwood in shingle habitats but is threatened by driftwood removal and burning.
In summer 2024, we surveyed Gileston Beach and confirmed a healthy population of Darkling Beetles. We plan to conduct further coastal surveys to identify additional suitable habitats and launch a community initiative encouraging people to leave driftwood on the beach to support this rare beetle.
