About the Richard Taylor Memorial Skatepark

The original facility opened in 2007 as a memorial to Richard John Taylor, a Barry-based professional British Champion Skater, funded by the Richard Taylor Memorial Fund Charity. Richard’s family have since worked closely with the Council and are a key stakeholder in the park’s development.

The new Richard Taylor Memorial Skatepark was officially opened in October 2023 thanks to financial support from Sport Wales, the Richard Taylor Memorial Fund, the Waterloo Foundation, South Wales Police Youth Trust, and the National Lottery Community Fund and UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The final design was agreed following extensive consultation with the local community, who worked closely with Bendcrete to agree the elements that should be included in the park.

The suggestion for a street art mural emerged from the consultation on the design of the replacement skatepark in September 2022.

The mural was not within the scope of the original project, however, the Richard Taylor Memorial Trust were keen to explore the idea.

Following initial consultation with CADW, and securing funding, planning consent was obtained including a 'locally themed street art mural' to be painted on the remaining top section of the existing retaining wall, subject to agreement on the detailed design and colours by planning condition.

The Council hosted a drop in event on the site with local street artists Hurt So Good in April 2023 to gather ideas for a design and give residents and visitors the opportunity to share their views.

Draft designs have now been drawn up, and the Council is undertaking consultation to gather feedback.
