Developing a new plan for Colcot Sports Centre and the Buttrills Playing Fields

We want to explore a new future for Colcot Sports Centre and the Buttrills Playing Fields in Barry.

We want to work with local residents, sports clubs and partners to understand what matters most, and whether there is support to shape a new plan together.

This is at an early stage. No decisions have been made. Previous ideas for the site, including proposals involving housing, are not being taken forward.

Earlier consultation showed strong local views about how the site should be used.

We have listened to that feedback and are starting again with a more open conversation about future possibilities.

If there is support from the community to do so, we may then apply for funding to support the development of these facilities. Any proposed plans would be consulted on at a later stage. This is the first step in developing a new plan for these sites.

This work builds on the adopted Barry Place Plan – a joint plan developed by Vale of Glamorgan Council and Barry Town Council, shaped by a range of local stakeholders and community voices.

One of the key themes that emerged from that engagement was the need to explore opportunities for neighbourhood facilities and to strengthen sport and physical activity across Barry through high-quality provision.

What are we trying to do?

At this stage, we are not proposing a specific solution.

Our aim is to understand:

  • how the site is currently used
  • what works well and what does not
  • what barriers people face in taking part in sport and activity
  • what local people, existing and potential future users of these facilities would like to see

We will use this feedback to explore what a realistic, community-supported plan could look like.

Any future plan would need to:

  • reflect local priorities
  • improve access and inclusion
  • make best use of available funding
  • be affordable and sustainable over time

We will only move forward if there is clear community support and a deliverable way to do so.

Why are we looking at these facilities?

More people than ever are taking part in sport in the Vale of Glamorgan, particularly football. Participation is growing quickly, especially among women and girls.

Colcot Sports Centre and the Buttrills Playing Fields already play an important role in supporting this.

We are very proud of the community facilities on offer throughout the Vale of Glamorgan and the increased participation in sports. However, the current building at Colcot is in very poor condition and no longer meets modern standards or community needs.

It is also increasingly expensive to keep the building open in its current state. This is not sustainable in the longer term, particularly when the facilities are not meeting expectations or supporting growing demand.

There are also parts of the site, such as the old artificial pitch, which have not been in use for several years.

Taken together, this creates a clear need to review how the site is used and how it could better serve the community in future.

We want to hear from you
